The following can give us ideas about what type of chase sequences we can have in our production. all of the scenes are of girls running away because stereotypically its always the girl that is scared and gets chased by the villain.

History of Horror

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 04:58

The History of Horror

Horror movies are films which bring out the emotions of fear, panic and terror from the viewing audience. Plots of horror films regularly include the ideas of death, supernatural beings and mental illness. The Majority of Horror films also include a main villain.

Early horror movies were mostly based on classic literature of the Gothic/Horror genre, these include: Dracula, Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera. The first ever depictions of supernatural events appeared in silent short films by the French film maker Georges Méliès (famous for his ground breaking use of special effects)

In the early 20th century more developments took place for the horror genre for example, the first monster was introduced in a full-length horror film Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre-Dame’ based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo. Many of the first horror films were made by German film makers these were called ‘Expressionist films’ which would later influence Hollywood films.

American Film makers began to make horror films more popular with successful gothic feature films such as Dracula and James Whale’s Invisible Man. These films we’re created to thrill but also included serious elements.

With advances in technology taking place during the 1950s, horror films moved away from the Gothic trend and started to fall into three sub-genres: the horror of personality, the horror of Armageddon and the horror of the demonic. From the 1950s to the 1960s films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’(1963) which depicted nature gone mad began to emerge. Ghosts and Monsters still remained popular, these films expressed horror of the demonic.

From the 1970s occultist films began to surface (occult basically means knowledge of the unknown, involving the characteristics of magic witchcraft or supernatural occurrence). An example of a film which follows this genre is ‘The Exorcist’ (1973) by William Friedkin in which the devil is represented as supernatural evil often by impregnating women and possessing children. ‘Evil Children’ and Reincarnation then became popular subjects which were then featured in films such as ‘The Omen’ (1976) were an man realises his five year old adopted son is the Antichrist. Satan then became the villain in many horror films there after.

The 1990s saw the popularity that horror films had decrease. This was due to the non-stop slasher films from the 1980s and the younger audiences has grown up. Horror had to find a new way to recapture its reputation. This saw the introduction of ironic and sometimes parodic films such as Wes Cravens ‘Scream’ (1996) were teenagers were aware of the history and conventions of horror. Other films such as I know what you did last summer and Urban legend helped to regain the popularity of slasher films.

The 21st saw the return of the Zombie theme in Horror movies films such as: Resident evil (2000) [based on the game after which 3 sequels followed], the British film ‘28 Days Later’, re-make of Dawn of the dead then made into a comedy ‘Shaun of the dead’. Re-makes became common in the 2000s such as 2003s ‘Texas chainsaw massacre’ and ‘Halloween’.

Brief Analysis Of One Missed Call

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 08:12

The reason why I chose to analyze this trailer is because the film coincides with our theme of technology.
The trailer opens with a statistic stating that, “everyday 2 billion cell phones ring”, this proves information for the audience. The way the text comes up on the screen is like it is being typed in on a phone, the phone dialing sound effect make it more appealing to the audience. The trailer uses sound bridges; a girl narrates, in-between two people talking and then shot changes to the girl who is narrating. Through out the whole trailer the theme tune is playing this constantly reminds the audience that the film is primarily based around technology. It ends with a montage of shots with fast pace music. We could use of these key idea’s in our trailer because it relates to our audience and genre!

Ideologies associated with our Idea

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 06:21

In our film we aimed to highlight the fact that we live in an age where the internet dominates the media. The increasing popularity of social networking sites such as facebook has meant bulling has become easier. The internet has also become increasingly more dangerous, chat sites play a big part in this with fake accounts and numerous paedophiles, murderer still online. Hopefully the film will shock people into being safer with the internet and make them more aware of internet bullying.

Sound.

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 02:15

Diegetic sound.

Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film:

voices of characters
sounds made by objects in the story
music represented as coming from instruments in the story space (source music)
Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world
Digetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.

Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound

Non-diegetic sound

Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:

narrator's commentary
sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
mood music
Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.
The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening. We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).

Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound.

Binary Opposition

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 11:29

A Binary opposition is a pair of opposites (for example light vs dark) that feature in a film.

-The Binary Opposition is between the forces of good and evil: this is the Hero and Victims Vs The Villain.

Challenged Stereotypes!

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 11:15

Usually in horror films a woman is the main protagonist, for example in the film ‘final destination’ Ali Carter portrays the main protagonist, the reason why film producers chose to use a woman for the hero is because they are more likely to submit to the villain than a man is. We are challenging this stereotype and are using a male character for our hero.

We have chosen to challenge the most obvious stereotype of this genre… the villain of our film is a woman, stereotypically a man has always portrayed the villain (a few examples are Mike Myers from Halloween and Jason from Friday the 13th). It is very rare to find a female villain because women are always portrayed as sweet and innocent, plus no one would expect them to be the killer the reversal in the gender of the villain will create an enormous twist in our narrative of the audience.

By Raheam

Twists

Posted by Joel, Raheam, Shaurav, Vivek | Posted in | Posted on 10:24

Every good Thriller film has a twist which the audience simply doesn’t expect; Law Abiding Citizen is a 2009 crime thriller in which Gerard Butler kills people from inside solitary in prison, through out the narrative the audience are led to believe that he has an accomplice on the outside but at the end it is revealed that he actually was able to leave his solitary cell.

This is an example of a perfectly executed twist, however if a twist is not properly registered with the audience the film can be a total flop. The main challenge concerned with integrating a twist into our plot is that if it is too predictable it will ruin our plot.

A twist is defined as an unexpected change in the direction of the plot which intrigues the audience, for us to do this properly we are going to use a ‘red herring’ which basically means that we are going to divert and misdirect the audience from a significant part in our narrative.
